The Envious Heart

We walked the path, side by side, I thought your heart,
was my guide. You said you loved,
the way I shined, A gentle soul, so sweet and kind.
I shared my gifts, without a thought,
The happiness I dearly sought, Was seeing smiles,
all around, On fertile, grateful ground.
But whispers came, a chilling breeze, That envy lurked,
beneath the trees. Your loving words, a clever mask,
To hide the bitterness, the hidden task.
My giving heart, you saw as weak, A chance to gain,
the things I seek To freely offer, without a plea,
You took and took, and envied me.
